A Democracy of Images is an online collection of stunning photographs, and a real visual treat, all taken from the Smithsonian Art Museum photograph collection. They represent the American experience and are grouped into four categories: American Characters, which contains photographs of people; Spiritual Frontier, which focuses on the wonders of the natural landscape; America Inhabited, which looks at industrialized America; and Imagination At Work, which presents more abstract pieces. The site also features an extended collection which features eight other categories.
My personal favorites are in the America Inhabited section with some amazing black and white photographs of big city nightlife. Clicking on an image will provide more information on the picture’s origin and also allows you to see an enlarged version.
