Digital Bookmobile Visits Library

The East Baton Rouge Parish Library will host the Digital Bookmobile, an immersive download experience inside a 74-foot, high-tech tractor-trailer, on Wednesday, December 3, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Main Library, 7711 Goodwood Boulevard.

Readers of all ages are invited to engage digital downloading through interactive demonstrations and experience the Library’s audiobook, eBook, music, and video download service at this free event. There will be giveaways throughout the day – including mp3 players!

The Digital Bookmobile is housed inside an 18-wheel tractor-trailer. This 74-foot community outreach vehicle is a high-tech update of the traditional bookmobile that has served communities for decades. The vehicle is equipped with broadband Internet-connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players, all of which help visitors explore the Library’s download service. Interactive learning stations give visitors an opportunity to search the digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and download and enjoy eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video from the Library.

Blogging Class

There will be a blogging class offered at the Main Library, this Saturday, November 29.

Blogging is one of the fastest and easiest ways to publish to the web. Learn about blogs and how to create your own blog with the free service from Blogger. In this class participants will learn how to:

  • Sign up for a free blog with Blogger*
  • Write a blog post and publish it to the web
  • Customize their blog
  • Blog responsibly and safely

Participants in this class are expected to be familiar with basic internet browsing (such as with Internet Explorer) and basic word processing.

*Participants must have an active email account in order to register with Blogger.

Poor Man’s Provence: Finding Myself in Cajun Louisiana

Poor Mans Provence

Award-winning syndicated columnist Rheta Grimsley Johnson visits the library for a special presentation and book signing of her new book Poor Man’s Provence: Finding Myself in Cajun Louisiana. Rheta has covered the South for over three decades as a newspaper reporter and columnist. She writes about ordinary but fascinating people, mining for universal meaning in individual stories.

Her awards include the Ernie Pyle Memorial Award for human interest reporting, the Headliner Award for commentary, and the American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award for commentary. In 1991, she was one of three finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for commentary.

Syndicated by King Features of New York, her column appears in about 50 papers nationwide. She is the author of several books, including Good Grief: The Story of Charles M. Schulz (1989). In 2000, she wrote the text for a book of photographs entitled Georgia.

A native of Colquitt, Georgia, Rheta grew up in Montgomery, Alabama and studied journalism at Auburn University. She has lived and worked in the South all her life.

Ask-a-Lawyer

Take advantage of free, individual, legal counseling sessions offered by the Pro Bono Project of the Baton Rouge Bar Association. Library Hurricane Notices

  • The Main Library and the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library are closed today (Monday, September 8, 2008) due to power outages. All other branches of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library will be open today from Noon to 8:00 p.m. The River Center Branch will close at its normal time at 7:00 p.m.
  • Beginning Tuesday, 09/09/08, through Thursday, 09/11/08, all branches of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library will open at the regularly scheduled time and will close at 8:00 p.m. One exception is the River Center Branch which will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • GREAT NEWS!!!! Storytime in the Children’s Room will be held as scheduled at each of the branch libraries. Come by and join in the fun!
  • Overdue fines will be suspended for a brief period of time due to the effects of Hurricane Gustav. Check with the Circulation Desk at your local branch library for more details.
  • Meeting room use has been suspended at all branch libraries for the remainder of this week, 09/08/09 through 09/12/08. Therefore, community organization meetings are also canceled this week. Check with your individual community organization to determine if an alternate meeting location and time has been arranged.

The 24 Hour Library

There will be a series of short one-hour seminars at the Main Library called The 24 Hour Library: Web 2.0 Tools @ Your Library. This series will cover the Library’s web-based tools, what they are and how to use them.

Free Books Online: Thursday, May 8, 7pm: Learn more about the Library’s eBook collection and how you can access it 24/7 from the library’s website.

Intro to Web 2.0 Tools: Thursday, May 15, 7pm: Learn what Web 2.0 tools are all about. The seminar will cover blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, social bookmarking, and collaborative software.

OverDrive: Thursday, May 29, 7pm: Learn how to use OverDrive, the Library’s new digital library. OverDrive allows you to check out and download audiobooks, eBooks, and videos from the comfort of your home.
