Europeana is the digital library of Europe, containing over 4 million items and counting. A number of high profile cultural establishments have contributed materials to this online library, from museums such as the Dutch Rijksmuseum, the Louvre and the British Museum, as well as art galleries, national archives and libraries.

The library has digitized print, video, audio and images.  Take at look at amazing historical documents, incredible high resolution art reproductions and timeless photographs. It can be really frustrating trying to find the order of books in a fiction series. Don’t tell anyone, but I’ll let you into a librarian secret. It’s called Fantastic Fiction. This is a site we often turn to when asked such questions. There is information on over 20,000 authors, its easy to browse alphabetically by author or to search by book title.

World Digital Library

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has launched the World Digital Library. This partnership with institutions around the world, available in seven languages, has a mission to provide free access to primary materials to promote cultural understanding. The site will be continually expanding as new contributions are added.

Some of the great items available to view include photographs of Lincoln, historic maps, memoirs dating back hundreds of years, and a translation of Aesop’s Fables in German from 1479 to name but a few.  All these items are online in incredible high quality.

If you’re a fan of all things maritime, you should check out the British National Maritime Museum online collection. Here you’ll find paintings of ships, battles, and captains courageous. There are also images of ship models, telescopes, maritime clocks, coins, meteorological instruments — and much, much more to excite the Admiral Lord Nelson wanna-be.

If you find an image you like, you can create a free e-card to send to your seafaring friends! Or you can purchase prints online. They make great gifts.

The library database Learning Express has added some great modules for job seekers. These include tools to help you make career decisions, assistance in creating resumes and cover letters including a variety of templates. The database also has job interview preparation and a tutorial on business communication skills.

This site is both weird & wonderful. The University of Nottingham has created a series of videos to compliment the elements in the periodic table.

Free Children’s Books Online

The International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL) is a non-profit online library of children’s books. It has over 3800 books available in 53 different languages! The books come from all over the world providing insight into different cultures and are great fun for children and adults alike.
