Compassionate Reads

At the Main Library each month we hold the Compassionate Book Club. It originally started as part of our Building Common Ground program from last year, where we read Karen Armstrong’s Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life and focused on a different step each month. Everyone got so much out of the experience that it has continued on in 2013. For this year we have chosen a variety of non-fiction titles that show the strength of compassion and the human spirit across different cultures.

Our next meeting is this coming Tuesday, August 27. We’ll be discussing I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity by Izzeldin Abuelaish. All meetings are at 7 p.m. at the Main Library. New members are always welcome so we hope to see you there!

Here is the schedule for the rest of the year:

Tuesday, September 24 – American Story: A Lifetime Search for Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things by Chris Dotson

Tuesday, October 22 – The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and Jeffrey Zaslow

Tuesday, November 19 – Fire in the Ashes: Twenty-Five Years among the Poorest Children in America by Jonathan Kozol

Tuesday, December 17 – Outcasts United: The Story of a Refugee Soccer Team that Changed a Town by Warren St. John

Here are the books we’ve read so far. You might have missed the discussion but these are well worth reading:
